Methods: Patients

with COPD (n = 433) and control subjects (n = 325) participated in the Bergen COPD Cohort Study during 2006-2009. Participants performed spirometry and answered extensive questionnaires. The risk factors for COPD, morning cough, cough with phlegm, chronic cough and dyspnoea were examined using logistic regression analysis. Analyses were stratified by gender.

Results: The prevalence of childhood exposure to ETS was 61%. After adjustment, women who were exposed to ETS during childhood had a higher risk of COPD than those who were not exposed: odds ratio 1.9, 95% confidence interval 1.0, 3.7. Other important predictors for COPD and respiratory symptoms among women were occupational dust exposure (COPD), family history of COPD (COPD, all

symptoms), current exposure to ETS in the home (morning cough) and education (COPD, dyspnoea). ETS exposure during childhood was associated with respiratory symptoms among males (odds ratios 1.5-1.7). “OBJECTIVE: To analyse the extent of drug resistance in clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from patients attending various tuberculosis (TB) clinics in Kerala, India.

DESIGN: Mycobacteria were isolated from sputum samples of TB patients. Isolates from 92 new and 104 retreatment cases were tested for resistance to four first-line drugs (isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol and streptomycin).

RESULTS: Twenty-three per cent of the isolates from new cases and 14% from retreatment cases were pan-susceptible, and the rest were resistant to at least one of the drugs. Multidrug-resistant isolates accounted for 5.4% among new cases and 16.4% among retreatment cases. It should be noted that 18.5% of the isolates were mycobacteria other than tuberculosis.

CONCLUSION: There is an urgent need for statewide surveys to assess the level of drug resistance using quality-assured culture and drug susceptibility services.

The use of a conductance-based MC model driven by an approximately balanced excitatory-inhibitory input conductance and a relatively small inhibitory conductance that oscillated at the gamma frequency allowed us to provide one explanation of the experimental data via a mode-locking mechanism. Stem cell sources for the recipients were as follows: related-donor bone marrow in 40, related-donor peripheral blood in 5, unrelated bone marrow in 67, and unrelated cord blood in 28. Results Symptomatic HHV-6 reactivation occurred in 22 patients (16%), and 11 patients manifested encephalitis. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis identified cord blood cell transplantation (CBT) as an independent predictor of HHV-6 reactivation (P=0.008). Hyponatremia or hypernatremia at the time of HHV-6 reactivation was detected before the development of HHV-6 encephalitis in 2 or 4 patients, respectively. Two patients died of HHV-6 encephalitis

We report a case of irreducible cervical fracture dislocation and kyphoscoliosis, in which surgical

“Anterior lumbar surgery is a common procedure for anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and artificial disc replacement (ADR). Our aim was to study the exposure related complications for anterior lumbar spinal surgery performed by spinal surgeons.

A retrospective ML323 review was performed for 304 consecutive patients who underwent anterior lumbar spinal surgery over 10 years (2001-2010) at our institution. Each patient’s records were reviewed for patients’ demographics,

diagnosis, level(s) of surgery, procedure and complications related to access surgery. Patients undergoing anterior lumbar access for tumour resection, infection, trauma and revision surgeries were excluded.

All patients underwent an anterior paramedian retroperitoneal approach from the left side. The mean age of patients was 43 years (10-73; 197 males, 107 females). Minor complications (13.8 %) included venous injury managed without repair (n = 5, 1.6 %), infection (n = 13, 4.3 %), incidental peritoneal opening (n = 12, 3.9 %), leg oedema (n = 2, 0.6 %) and others (n = 10, 3.3 %). We had no cases of retrograde ejaculation.

We report a very thorough and critical review of our anterior lumbar access surgeries performed mostly for DDD and spondylolisthesis at L4/5 and L5/S1 levels. Vascular problems of any type (24/304, 7.8 %) were the most common complication during this approach. The incidence of major venous injury requiring repair was 14/304 (4.6 %) and arterial injury 5/304 (1.6 %).
