This was not surprising considering that these proteins play a fundamental role in cell wall bio synthesis and modification and are therefore tightly regulated during stem development. It included a num ber of glycosyl transferases and several glycosyl hydro lases representing families having cellulase, things b 1,3 glucanase, xylanase, xyloglucan endotransglucosylase hydrolase, glucan endo 1,3 beta D glucosidase, invertase and b D galactosidase activity. These enzymes are var iously required for cell wall loosening and elongation, formation of the secondary cell walls of vascular tissues, hydrolysis of the xylan backbone, post translational modifications of proteins and mobili zation of energy in form of sucrose.
