This research focused on the experiences of young Korean adults with SB, seeking to identify the variables that either eased or obstructed their journey from adolescence to adulthood.
This study's methodology was characterized by a qualitative, descriptive design. Data acquisition occurred in South Korea through three focus group interviews with 16 young adults (19-26 years old) diagnosed with SB, from August to November 2020. We undertook a conventional qualitative content analysis to determine the elements that aided and obstructed participants' transition into adulthood.
Two key themes arose as both supports and hindrances in the transition to adulthood's responsibilities. Understanding and accepting SB by facilitators, coupled with mastering self-management skills, and supportive parenting practices encouraging autonomy, are essential; in addition, parental emotional support, conscientious school teacher considerations, and participation in self-help groups should be provided. Overprotective parenting, peer harassment, a tarnished self-worth, hiding a chronic condition, and inadequate restroom privacy in school represent significant barriers.
Navigating the transition from adolescence to adulthood presented unique challenges for Korean young adults with SB, particularly in the self-management of chronic conditions, including regular bladder emptying. For adolescents with SB to successfully transition to adulthood, education on SB management and self-care skills, alongside instruction on effective parenting techniques for their parents, is essential. We describe a protocol for a randomized controlled trial that will investigate the impact of an 8-week overground walking program, with paretic lower limb loading, on the spatiotemporal gait parameters and motor function of chronic stroke survivors.
Two centers are involved in this single-blind, two-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial design. To investigate the effects of paretic lower limb loading during overground walking, 48 stroke survivors with mild to moderate disabilities will be recruited from two tertiary facilities and randomly assigned to two intervention groups: one involving overground walking with paretic lower limb loading, and the other involving overground walking without such loading; the ratio of participants allocated to each group being 11 to 1. The intervention plan is to administer treatments three times a week for eight weeks. The assessment of step length and gait speed will be used as the primary outcomes, while secondary outcomes will include step length symmetry ratio, stride length, stride length symmetry ratio, stride width, cadence and assessments of motor function. At the commencement of the intervention, and subsequently at weeks 4, 8, and 20, all outcomes will be assessed.
